On 2nd September 2015, The Comparative International Education Society (CIES)’s Indigenous Knowledge and the Academy SIG will host a virtual roundtable (webinar) on What is Indigenous Knowledge? and Who is Indigenous?’ The goal is to explore both the richness and diversity of knowledges, as well as to highlight current and historical challenges and evolving goals of Indigenous education.

To set the stage, three experts on the topic will present their perspectives, research and experience, and we will follow with Q&A.
Dr. Ladislaus M. Semali is a Professor of Education at the Pennsylvania State University, in the Learning and Performance Systems Department. Originally from Tanzania, his major areas of research are language, media, and literacy education. He is currently the Co-Director of the Interinstitutional Consortium for Indigenous Knowledge.
Dr. Regina Cortina is a Professor of Education in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies and coordinator of coordinator of the International and Comparative Education since program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her latest book, The Education of Indigenous Citizens in Latin America (Multilingual Matters, 2014), describes unprecedented changes in education across Latin America that resulted from the endorsement of Indigenous people’s rights through the development of intercultural and bilingual education.
Stephen Wall (White Earth Reservation) spent 11 years with the Mescalero Tribal Court, serving as Prosecutor and as Chief Judge. In addition to teaching at Fort Lewis College, he has also been adjunct professor at the University of New Mexico and has developed and taught a vast number of workshops and trainings for community and professional development. He is Chair of Indigenous Liberal Studies at Institute of American Indian Arts.
