Special Issue on “Being Indigenous Today” for Spring 2016; Vol. (2) Issue (1)

Various sources have estimated that there are 370 million indigenous people around the world. In addition to the same challenges previous generations have faced, now indigenous people also confront newer societal, ecological, and economic problems. At the same time, they are presented with opportunities to represent and organize themselves through technological innovation, global connections, political mobilization, and academic networking. So, what does being indigenous today look like? How do indigenous person(s) and people(s) connect to the past? What future(s) are envisioned? What matters today?

The Spring 2016 special issue of IK: Other Ways of Knowing, a publication of the Interinstitutional Center for Indigenous Knowledge at the Pennsylvania State University is currently seeking articles on the theme of BEING INDIGENOUS TODAY.

This special issue seeks articles on indigeneity that explore contemporary issues facing indigenous persons and peoples. Possible topics include (but are not limited to) identification, representation, activism, ethnohistory, life history, revitalization, reconfiguration, economy, society, and ecology, particularly as they concern change, challenge, and opportunity. Assessments of such topics at different levels—local, national, regional, international, and global—and at different scales—individual, family, household, community, society, and nation—are welcomed.

Articles for this special issue are due September 15, 2015.

Authors should submit their manuscripts electronically via the PSU Libraries Open Journal System (OJS) located at http://journals.psu.edu/ik/user/register. A manuscript submission must be original and accompanied by a statement that it has not been published elsewhere and that it has not been submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Submissions must include an abstract of not more than 150 words. Authors are also encouraged to suggest names of potential reviewers. Visual materials and illustrations should be included with the article. More details on author guidelines for submission can be found at http://journals.psu.edu/ik/about/submissions#authorGuidelines

The Interinstitutional Center for Indigenous Knowledge is affiliated with the global network of indigenous knowledge resource centers in South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. In 2010, ICIK became the only global indigenous knowledge resource center in North America when an extensive indigenous knowledge resource collection amassed by Dr. Michael Warren at Iowa State University’s Center for Indigenous Knowledge in Agriculture and Rural Development (CIKARD) was acquired by the Pennsylvania State University Libraries. ICIK’s open access journal, IK: Other Ways of Knowing, is published and archived at http://journals.psu.edu/ik.

Questions about this special issue should be addressed to Pasang Y. Sherpa ([email protected]). For OJS technical support, please contact Mark Mattson ([email protected], 814-865-2486). For other requests, please contact one of the journal’s editors: Helen Sheehy ([email protected]) or Amy Paster ([email protected]).
