KeymasterA note about the World Bank’s African Centers of Excellence program (ACE II) which is launching the call for proposals for Eastern and Southern Africa:
Today, the ACE II Call for Proposals was launched from the ACE II website: http://ace2.iucea.orgo, very exciting!! The official press release will take place next Tuesday. Institutions should start the proposal preparation immediately as the deadline is Oct 2, 2015.
One of the main expectations for ACE II is that the selected ACEs will produce high quality training and applied research to address prioritized development challenges facing the region through regional collaboration and partnerships. So, it would be even better if you could encourage your institutions to reach out and forge partnerships with academic and public institutions as well as the industry in Eastern and Southern Africa and other regions to develop great proposals!
Ten countries have officially expressed interest in their ACE II participation – Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. A Regional Steering Committee (RSC) consisting of representatives from these countries, academia, the private sector and regional bodies was established. The RSC selected the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) as the Regional Facilitation Unit (RFU) for ACE II. In the past three months, all the participating countries (except Burundi) have conducted in-country consultation workshops, in which many higher education institutions both public and private and other key stakeholders participated. Most countries have identified their national priorities in line with the regional ones, established their own in-country process to handle the proposal preparation and support, and created synergy among interested institutions for potential partnerships. With broader consultations, the RSC finalized the regional priorities for the ACE II project. They are clustered into four areas: (i) STEM,(ii) agriculture, (iii) health, and (iv) STI and quality of education, and applied statistics. You can find details and other useful info on the ACE II website: http://ace2.iucea.org , in addition to all the info regarding the Call for Proposals.
The selection of winning proposals will be done by an Independent Evaluation Committee during October and November. The final selection decision will be made by the RSC in early December. The announcement is expected to go out in mid-December. So, stay tuned! We appreciate your continuing support to the ACE II project! Have a great weekend!
